Whigs were a second party to Democrats in the early 1800s. Copperhead was the name of a faction in the Republican party during Reconstruction. (after the Civil War) It can't be all of the above because Whig and Copperhead are not third parties.

Third parties have never controlled a major part of the US. Government. The best they can do disrupt the vote. That's how Clinton beat Bush 41. And Lincoln beat out all the different "Democrat" parties in 1860.
