Bahaha I tried guitar once, but failed. I am not a guitar person. I had a teacher and everything. She always told me to sing the note while playing the guitar. Let's say you are playing an A. You say 'A' while playing the note

I find it easiest to use http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ and learn songs (they show how to play the chord) than to learn chords individually, as you will learn transitions, and it will make you more eager to learn chords. Youtube videos also help, as @this_emo_chic1023 said. Once you learn the chords, it helps to use @sammixboo 's method of saying the chord as your playing, and merging it in with the lyrics.

@cregannn have you tried buying a teach yourself guitar book? I bought one at my local GoodWill and it works great for me.

There's a great website for people who want to learn, you have to pay for the songbooks, but the videos showing you how to play the guitar are free and they're pretty good. http://justinguitar.com/ So try that!!! And also you can go on http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ and pick a song you like on there and look at the chords and just practice going from chord to chord smoothly. I also find that going on youtube and looking up cover songs for the song you want and watching one that has guitar in it. Try to look at the way they play the guitar. You can mimic the strumming patterns and the way they play. Hope this helped!!
