Assume that the shorter piece is \(x\) (ft) long. Then the longer piece is \(18-x\) (ft). Given the longer piece is 2 (ft) less than 3 times the length of the shorter => \(18-x=3x-2\). Solve for \(x\), you will get the length of the shorter piece. The longer piece is \(18-x\).

so the shorter piece is 5 ?

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, 5 and 13
