The number '12' in carbon-12 is the atomic weight. This is the total number of protons and neutrons. So Hydrogen-2 would have one proton (since its hydrogen) and 1 neutron. Carbon-12 has 6 protons, and then there are 6 neutrons. Carbon-14 has 6 protons, so it must have 8 neutrons (8+6=14).

I would correct you on one small point:-  12 is the Mass Number not the Atomic Weight
