What is your opinion on the meaning of life? I'm writing a quick essay on the meaning of life as a practice topic. Why do you think we are alive? What is our purpose? Do we have one? I want to contrast other people's ideas with my own. :) Sorry for the hard question lol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not asking you to provide reasons, just a quick sentence. Like "The meaning of life is spreading joy" or "The meaning of life is simply to live." Or, "Life has no meaning." I'm just curious what people think, and I wanted to try my hand at writing an essay on a philosophical subject.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

People have been asking this since the beginning. I believe there really is no reason/ legit answer, we just exist because we got lucky, I look at in a cosmic perspective way. I can tell you if you want a PURPOSE you will have to decide that on your own as it will be your own destiny, that maybe it, but seems over used. So, now away from what I said earlier, and look at what I really think our purpose as humans beings is. Going through history, it seems knowledge (yes I said it) is our key ingredient in solving such a question. We are curious beings (most of us at least), that we can't deny, it seems over history we are always trying to gather this knowledge to try and help ourselves but it leads to helping the world, going from the time of Bruno (who got lucky at guessing how the Universe might be like) to Copernicus revolution (read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copernican_Revolution) all the way to Newton and now. We have this thirst of knowledge to trying to figure out what the Universe holds, I think this is our true passion in life, we're all the sons/ daughters of ancient astronomers as they used the stars for timing and everything. This I personally believe could be our meaning, the knowledge and connection to the universe, it's not so much a secret that we know we are composed of the star stuff as Carl Sagan would say. But, why do I talk about the Universe, because every time we went looking for what it holds, we have found more questions as you just asked and more ways to solving the problems on here. What I'm trying to say is, the meaning of life for me or I think for humans is to build/ invent/ innovate and not conquer, but realize where we are in the Universe and respect it for what it is. At the end of the day you want to be connected to something, and knowing we're all related in one way or the other, and give us a meaning, that is why I relate it to Astronomy, the humblest of all professions.

Wow, thank you for your answer! You did an amazing job explaining your views.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha, np, it's very rare I get such an opportunity, so thank you :)!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the meaning of life is to simply leave your mark on the world by doing whatever you want. However, I think love and loving others is essential, along with being smart and working hard. Im sorry its not as long as @iambatman lol but thats my short little view on this :) If you want more I could formulate all my ideas for ya but I doubt you need that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you! I don't need you to elaborate unless you want to, haha. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think that life is just a metaphor for death. Theres always a beginning and theres always an end. i think the meaning to death is just as mysterious as the meaning of life. i believe there is so form of meaning but i also believe that we have no way of truly knowing only guesses and views of individualized perspective.

Thank you for your response!

OpenStudy (matlee):

The meaning of life is to never question it but to make life in every meaning

OpenStudy (matlee):

I pulled that one out of my butt so no applause please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you mean by "to make life in every meaning?"

OpenStudy (matlee):

Like make life, have babies, live your life, influence, creation.

OpenStudy (matlee):

Anything that is possible but with intentions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, the meaning of life is to live. Makes sense. May I ask why you shouldn't question it? (Well, aside from the fact that you'll go crazy if you do, because you can never know the truth about it)

OpenStudy (matlee):

It means, life is not like a math problem or procedure, there is nothing to question, if you question how good or how bad good things are you will only be killing yourself. I read a passage one time is said if a man makes it his goal to do something good then he is no better than -something i dont remember- a fool. But had he never had to think about his good deeds he would never have to question it.

OpenStudy (matlee):

I am slowly losing my memory haha i keep trying to explain it to you but it runs from me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's okay haha, I think I understand what you're saying. :)

OpenStudy (matlee):

Lee not to bother you but do you really know, its your choice if you want to ask it or not

OpenStudy (matlee):

Ok, ill go back to my post lol cause i need help with french, but if you ever miss your oppurtinity. Ask a very good chess player.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I really know what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do we really know what life is? Life is a puzzle. Having missing pieces here and there. Never really getting the chance of a full picture. No one ever gets the full picture. There is to much humanity holds for a single person to live every moment the life holds. Life is the definition of a path that no one can finish. One may say live life to the fullest. But can you really? Can we take in every smell, every touch, every peace of everything known to man. Can you say that you have discovered or know everything when there is an endless meaning. We have not yet to discover space. How can we discover life? How can we define life? But the thing is we can't. Life is so much more then just a single person. Life is moments tht never can be given back. We have yet to discover what life is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you! So then, why do you choose to live?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

People think of a full life as a happy life. But not all moments are sweet and pleasent. I would say that the reason we live is to see who can have the most life. To discover more than others in past life. To give others in the future more to take in. To keep humanity going on to discover more.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you very much for your response!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the meaning of life is to make a profit, produce more than you consume. Make the world a better place, take care of yourself and find somebody else to help out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The meaning of life is a philosophical and spiritual question concerning the significance of life or existence in general. It can also be expressed in different forms, such as "Why are we here?", "What is life all about?", and "What is the purpose of existence?" It has been the subject of much philosophical, scientific, and theological speculation throughout history. There have been a large number of proposed answers to these questions from many different cultural and ideological backgrounds. The meaning of life is in the philosophical and religious conceptions of existence, social ties, consciousness, and happiness, and borders on many other issues, such as symbolic meaning, ontology, value, purpose, ethics, good and evil, free will, the existence of one or multiple gods, conceptions of God, the soul, and the afterlife. Scientific contributions focus primarily on describing related empirical facts about the universe, exploring the context and parameters concerning the 'how' of life. Science also studies and can provide recommendations for the pursuit of well-being and a related conception of morality. An alternative, humanistic approach poses the question "What is the meaning of my life?" The value of the question pertaining to the purpose of life may coincide with the achievement of ultimate reality, or a feeling of oneness, or even a feeling of sacredness.
