•What are the main elements of Japanese bushido? •What are the main elements of European chivalry? •Which of the elements of bushido and chivalry would work well for a code of chivalry in today’s world? Explain. @confluxepic @AnswerMyQuestions @TheSmartOne @Conqueror

Morality, Courage,Benevolence, Respect, Honesty, Honor , and Loyalty are the main elements of Japanese bushido. Chivalry, or the chivalric code, is the traditional code of conduct associated with the medieval institution of knighthood. [ It was originally conceived of as an aristocratic warrior code — the term derives from the French term for horseman — involving individual training and service to others. Over time its meaning has been refined to emphasize more ideals such as knightly virtues, honour and courtly love, and less the martial aspects of the tradition. The Knight's Code of Chivalry was a moral system that stated all knights should protect others who can not protect themselves, such as widows, children, and elders. All knights needed to have the strength and skills to fight wars in the Middle Ages. While have studied Bushido quite extensively as well as Samurai who follow this code. I don't think the two can be mixed together. Bushido is the "way of the warrior" and Chivalry is the "way of the gentleman". One is for war and the other is basically how to treat women who do not believe they are above you. Bushido is like the Dragon vs. Tiger. Fierce like the Tiger, but that fierceness is refined by the wisdom and serenity that is the Dragon. IF there were elements that would work well in todays world then i would have to say Honor: (let no man or woman take that from you) Duty: (to one's self and the important people in his life) Self-sacrifice: (This one is tricky if it has to do for a greater cause like victory over an enemy then fine, we all heard stories like the 300 SPARTANS, but if it is choosing whether to get women on a boat over yourself or your son then that would be sexist) Both were the codes of aristocratic elites, but bushido seems to have stressed a bit more of an honor/loyalty component. [ After all, chivalry was based on a contractual agreement between lord and vassal. According to what I read, the code of the samurai was originally developed from the Way of Horse and Bow, and then, after some influence from Zen Buddhism and Confucianism, into bushido, or the Way of the Warrior. The development of chivalry, on the other hand, is often tied to the Christianizing influences of the church on Europe's warriors, as well as its ties to feudalism. I have also seen ties to Germanic influences as well. Both chivalry and bushido have been criticized as being romanticized unrealities.
