The price of a coat is $144 before sales tax. The sales tax is 7%. Find the TOTAL cost of the coat.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

144 * 1.07

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or 144 * .07= x 144 + x = total cost of the coat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

114 x .07= X X= Cost of coat Like you said

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

if we take the 144 to be the 100% then we'd need to add the 7% tax to that so we could say that \(\bf \begin{array}{cccllll} amount&\% \\\hline\\ 144&100\\ x & 100+7 \end{array}\implies \cfrac{144}{x}=\cfrac{100}{100+7}\) solve for "x" since "x" would be the 100% + 7% or "total cost"

I got $121.98 cause I did 144x.07 and the answer is/maybe $121.98

OpenStudy (radar):

Note the price of $144.00 is "before" sales tax. I believe khusker has nailed it.
