You can't add a variable to a number. You add LIKE terms. Those are NOT like terms. It's simplified. I think you're missing information.

A represents a number, we dont know what it is, we do know its going to be times 5 and + 2, since we don't know what it is, we can add 2 to 5 and still times that by A. In this case we don't know what it is, so we just keep the A there, as 6a
