TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

I have an idea! A lot of people say that the chats are spammed with trollers and spammers and whatsoever. Maybe if OS put a 10 second time limit between each chat post a user can do...

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Like I know they do that for asking questions but for the chats it should be like 7 seconds or 10 is fine...

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

10 seconds? so if someone says hi to me, it would take me ten seconds to say hi back to them if I had just spoken? ew perhaps not that long? tho I liked the ss restraint idea better :/

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I still like 75 seconds - your SS as a pause. So once people get up there, the pause is gone.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

How about we disable the chats completely and replace them with something easier to handle?

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

And what would be easier to handle.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

@e.mccormick That isn't helpful to high SS people... The people who actually now that spamming will get them suspended and warned..

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yes, well, none of the suggestions given have been designed to stop high SS people from spamming.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

what if you post x amount of times in an x-minute long time span and then a pop-up comes up and says something like "whoa there! you seem like you might be spamming. why not take a break?" and then you have to wait like 30 sec to post something else in the chat like if you post 10 times in a minute, it'll pop up or something

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

@e.mccormick A time which is the same for everyone...

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

They already do something like that for questions. So the code is in there.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Yes but not for chats.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@TheSmartOne The reason why I point it out is because of how code gets reused... so if they have the code, it can be easier to reuse. As for the 10 seconds for all, it would basically be killing the chats as chats, as opposed to limiting them to being chats for people that have earned it by working hard on OS over time.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i think my idea, plus a minimum SS requirement for chat privilege should reduce spam. i think a SS of like 30 should unlock chats

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Same ^^

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

I am thinking of an ss of 60. That is not hard to earn.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i think that is way too high

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

It is easy to get there.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

@AriPotta Getting to 65 is very tough but getting to 60 is easy. 60 SS means that you a couple fans, a few questios asked, and around 100 medals But I would think 55 SS.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

"you a couple fans"

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

lol

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

you have a couple*

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i just don't want lower SS users to not have the ability to chat for so long. idk, maybe 30 SS is too low, but 60 is too high imo

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Didn't we already have this asked earlier? I do agree, with that.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Yes but nothing comes out of it...

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

Then what is the point of asking bringing it up again.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

wow I never saw your post @jigglypuff314 until now... OS lagging probably didn't show it..

OpenStudy (compassionate):

30 SmartScore is easy to get under this system. 50 is a bit more realistic.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Ok 50 then.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The one \(\huge \textbf{insanely huge}\) problem with a minimum chat SS is this: One of the only reasons chat has not been removed completely is that it allows new users to post links to their questions. This helps alleviate the dead subject area problem. If you do not address this, then making the chat completely unavailable to people with a 0 SS is simply a way if saying that chat is no longer needed.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Oh....

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Which is why I say an SS based delay. That, or find another solution to the dead subjects.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

If you want to remove the chats just have an option in the question that says "Post Link Into Chat" or what ever you want to put in place of the chats. Like "Post Link Into Question Viewer" or something else.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

@e.mccormick

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I always thought a custom left hand side where you can pick and mix the topics would be useful. Then you use a topic pulldown for where to ask in, but could reply in different topics at the same time.

OpenStudy (kainui):

@TheSmartOne There's a phrase, "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater." Research what this means and come back to us. I don't think this is the solution, but I admire your willingness to brainstorm and come up with new ideas. =D

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Umm. We have to empty the water from the bathtub without harming the baby...

OpenStudy (perl):

i actually think this is a bad idea, some people like to post new thoughts as they come along during a math problem and don't want to wait 10 seconds. This idea is used on reddit, which is the reason why i dont use reddit.com

OpenStudy (aripotta):

well this would only be for the chats?

OpenStudy (perl):

im not sure.

OpenStudy (perl):

oh i guess :) , but still

OpenStudy (perl):

people would not want to wait 10 seconds in between saying something

OpenStudy (perl):

it would be nice if they put the chat box in a different part of open study. i think it distracts people who want math help . oh well

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

@perl This is for chats not posts in a question.

OpenStudy (perl):

ahhh

OpenStudy (perl):

some people come here to chat, they may not take a liking to it :)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

There already is a spam control on question posts. Might also help a ton if the chat input was dropped from 600 down to 200 characters.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

That too maybe...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what if it were to pause for ten seconds only for the spammer if he/she had chatted 10 or more times in one minute.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

umm. that is what we kind of said...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just remove the chats...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's the point of them anyways?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

idk

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

So that people can post off topic things without spamming hte topics and so that people have a way to promote a question to try and get help.

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

Lets get back to topic O.S.S.F. is supposed to be getting rid of these "trollers" and "spammers" Even though I have never seen a "troller" being warned by an O.S.S.F. member Neither have I seen any in action... I do have to say though, nowadays there a far less "trollers" and "spammers" than before for some suspicious reason. I'm pretty sure its not because of O.S.S.F. but trollers have been fading away I can't remember the last time I have seen a spam in a chat (unless its community spam c;) Also, profanity has taken a cut, I haven't seen tht as much either... Weird...

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

Profanity has not taken a cut. I have went to various questions and have seen profanity. Some people even have bad words in their username. That would still be a problem. However there have been a lot less spammers. I never see chat spammers. But there are a lot of question spammers.
