OpenStudy Feedback 15 Online
OpenStudy (perl):

Here and there I see open study feedback on the various glitches. I think we should organize this information on glitches. You could even dedicate a part of open study to 'technical software or internet issues'. I say this because a lot of people just want to talk about their technical problems. And maybe we could even start organizing this information about the various glitches. Put them in categories.

OpenStudy (perl):

For example, my browser is freezing right now as i am typing this.

OpenStudy (perl):

i could take a screen shot of some of the comments i see

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

There was a post with glitch solutions.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

@perl @StudyGurl14

OpenStudy (perl):

i mean they should dedicate a whole part of open study just to glitches

OpenStudy (perl):

You could even make it a 'subject', so people wait to help people with their problems.

OpenStudy (perl):

but it would be nice so at least the comments are *just* about glitches, nothing else. this is useful for the openstudy coders.

OpenStudy (perl):

OpenStudy Technical Software Issues

OpenStudy (perl):

how's that, glitches sounds kind of slang

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

yeah, I think glitches are a huge problem, but i don't think there should be a section dedicated to it...people can just post their glitch problems in openstudy feedback

OpenStudy (perl):

no? but it would be helpful to organize the information by category

OpenStudy (perl):

Draw Box Glitches <--- collect every subtype of draw box error Latex problems

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

i guess...but more categories to me creates more problems...i already have enough difficulty navigating the stupid subjects while the website is loading...

OpenStudy (perl):

login errors

OpenStudy (perl):

i only stay in 3 categories

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

maybe just a catch-all one i guess...I like the sound of OpenStudy Technical Difficulties....

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

yea but @perl people are always linking me to different categories...

OpenStudy (perl):

Yes, dedicate some part of open study to Open Study Technical issues

OpenStudy (perl):

like some websites have a help section , live chat

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

yea, it sure would be busy lol

OpenStudy (perl):

yes

OpenStudy (perl):

lets see where this goes .

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

^^ lets see.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

You want someone to tell you pros and cons.. Well where is @Compassionate and @e.mccormick

OpenStudy (kainui):

I thought there was something like this already. It was like some kind of spreadsheet online where you could submit to it and then there were like comments on it.

OpenStudy (perl):

yes something like that would be good.

OpenStudy (perl):

questions like , does this work better in windows 64 bit?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You talking about this kai? http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/5377b7d5e4b0ba022d36af38 This was for ideas, but they should I agree, make one for technical difficulties and such.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, either give it, it's own section or make a spread sheet, I think giving it its own section would be easier, but implying making a new section is easy that is.

OpenStudy (perl):

technical help subcategories , too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For sure!

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

I agree

OpenStudy (perl):

:)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Actualy, feedback is for glitches. It just gets abused a lot.

OpenStudy (perl):

i didnt know that

OpenStudy (perl):

maybe we can be more scientific about this, get specific information about the glitches, and collect them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I knew that haha, but the thing is, it doesn't seem to be taken as seriously though as I've observed...you can get people to answers, but it doesn't get sent to the development team (or at least most times), I do think there should be a specific sub topic for it.

OpenStudy (perl):

get information about browser, operating system, and even computer type , how much ram

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Actually, they do get sent to development. Just tad me if you have an issue that might need to get passed on to dev.

OpenStudy (perl):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ily

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I pass them on quite regularly. I'm one of about 4 mods that has the emails for the dev team. They were given to us for when things stopped working at the worst of the orange war, but I also use them to pass on bug links.

OpenStudy (perl):

orange war?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, that's good to know, thanks again e.mc :)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Orange War. Yes. They edited the colors on this... normally it is all orange, this, Orange War: http://assets.openstudy.com/updates/attachments/542c3e97e4b024bb3215decf-night-watcher-1412188512234-picture.png

OpenStudy (perl):

sorry, i still don't understand what Orange War is

OpenStudy (perl):

colors malfunctioned?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah in a nutshell, it's where everyones SS turns orange and you can't see their SS, the numbers usually disappear or have 1 or 5 or something as your SS, it glitches the site out.

OpenStudy (perl):

do you know what causes this?

OpenStudy (perl):

yes i have seen my score turn bright red

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no clue, @e.mccormick probably knows something that could be related to it.

OpenStudy (perl):

ok, thanks

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Orange war is caused by the part of the site scripts that read the SS not being able to get the information from the server. This SS update service is not related to the question viewing, but does seem related to message notifications, so I like to call it the Updater because it updates the clients. The OS servers are on a cluster. The main DB server is read/write. The wen servers each have a DB instance that allows read only access for faster reads and less load on the main DB. When the updater fails on one or more of the servers, peple do not get messages if they are on that server. They do not get notifications. All SS go orange. A refresh causes these things to go through, which is a manual poll of the DB without being updated.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

That helped me understand everything.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Also, when you load the page all SS are orange. The updater then rapidly populates them. If there is lag you can actually watch the process. This is another reason why I feel it is a singular service that sends changes. What has caused it to fail has been diverse. Posts here have clearly defined three different causes and shown two other times that were new and never defined. So 5 different things, one being a user, caused the Orange War incidents at different times.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

Sometimes it loads my ss but not others.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

This is what I know from digging, talking to developers, talking to older users who used to talk to the older developers, etc. All on top of doing some code myself. (I can play pinball on my phone now, wheeee... buggy tho.)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

My code is not for the site tho. It just helps me understand the problems in the development process for a group of programmers that had nothing to do with the origin of this site.

OpenStudy (perl):

sorry, i need some help with acronyms OS = openstudy SS = ? smartscore DB = database?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

You are GTG.... good to go!

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

^^ lol
