Whats a moderator and if you can how do you become one?
@geerky42
A moderator moderates the sites... He has a lot of powers.
@e.mccormick is a mod xD
Alsoto be a mod you have to be 18+ And a squeaky clean record.
ALso according to mods, asking to become a mod ruins your chances when you are eligible.
being a mod involves many responsibilities
^^
Asking does not help... and there are lots of posts on becoming a mod. Also, most people think being a mod is fun until they become a mod. It is not about fun. I am not saying it is bad. It is just not what people think.
The bad: Lets see, get emailed questions and tagged on questions in every topic no matter what you can help with. Get spammed with notifications... sadly that is how reports work. Stand in judgment of activities that occur on OpenStudy and carry out sentence for said actions. Sadly, there is no polite way to say this, but that is what it is. (It is really hard to decide if a question is homework or a test!) Be attacked regularly by trolls. None of these are particularly fun. The good: Satisfaction from knowing you are actively trying to help keep OpenStudy as a friendly place where students can meet and tutor each other. Seen as an expert, justified or not, in topics lets you show your expertise in the places where it is justified. The ugly: We have had moderators removed. A few let it go to their head and started messaging girls with strange things. This has happened twice! We have had more than a few who got burned out on it. This happens when the bad outweighs the good for that particular person.
wow
^ ikr
Can we know them mods name? jk
can we know their mods name?
It was good to be a mod.. Should have behaved :(
jk
I will not name the mods that were removed. I was a mod when one was removed and another mod told me about the other. Another power trip mod was one that got sick and tired of a really bad cheater who was constantly using bad language, making threats, etc. They found their school and got the user into trouble because all this was happening from the library. Those abusive mods were banned, as in not only no longer a mod but also no longer users, though over time some of the bans have been lifted and they can make a normal user account. So mods are monitored by OpenStudy and abusers are removed.
Wow.
And in advance of anyone asking, what tkhunny is doing is not seen as abuse. So no, he will not be removed for people using acronyms to hide swearing in chat.
I like tkhunny. I have no problem with him...
for suspending people... bla bla. They complain to us regularly about him and Preetha's repl is, "I will not remove a mod for suspending people over using wt* in chat." or words to that effect.
He does his job... It says no swearing.. He gives them warnings but they don't listen and keep it up so he has no ther choice but to suspend them...
The CoC says no swearing.
Yep. It also says no avoiding the filters. Using an acronym is avoiding the filters.
Exactly. Good Job @tkhunny *Pats on the back*
Another thing; Ambassadors, and especially Moderators, are judged more harshly for seemingly innocent violations. A user may slip here and there, and may not even get a warning. On the other hand, even minor violations committed by a moderator will not go unnoticed.
After reading every single comment of @e.mccormick i'm pretty sure mod is not about fun \(\color{red}[:)]\)
Well, we tend to prod each other first... which Preetha calls a learning moment... but if it gets to "Suspend" point is is VERY likely to get to ban point.
In addition, Moderators have a separate set of rules independent from the Code of Conduct that they must adhere to. So, if you're having trouble regulating and following the current rules; odds are you won't make it when an entire manual of additional rules are thrown at you.
@Nnesha Hehe. It can be fun. It is great when people want the mod to help them. But really, a lot of the content moderation is a pain. I just went through today and deleted off about 200 medal party posts from 5 or 6 users. So their smart score will take a hit there... wheee. How exciting is that?
Yeah, and some of our best Moderators have gone inactive *prod prod* @jagatuba
Zarkon is back more, and I saw KonradZuse on just recently!
I've also seen Sasogeek online. The prophecy will soon be complete... And then.... The world will be....Mine....
It is immensely rewarding when people learn what constitutes bad behavior and then change that behavior to be good OpenStudy citizens. I keep trying to go inactive, but so far, it isn't working. It's compelling because I want to help math students.
Yes, that is part of what I mean by "Satisfaction from knowing you are actively trying to help keep OpenStudy as a friendly place where students can meet and tutor each other."
I once watched @tkhunny fight off a group of Keyboard warriors for 3 hours straight all over a single justified warning. Your patients is revering.
Well, I guess we could call them your patients. It's like a psychward in here sometimes.
Funny thing. I am often accused of sweeping chats and suspending everyone. Truth is, I don't even know how to get deliberately to a particular chat. I go when there is a complaint and a link provided. If I could convince some users that their BEHAVIOR is the problem, instead of their view that the RULES or MODERATORS are the problem, there would be nothing about OpenStudy that wouldn't be fun. :-)
@tkhunny and @e.mmm i know you guys not gonna tell your age so can i ask a question are you student ???
I just want one of these: http://www.rotaractorwiki.org/images/4/48/Flaming-ban-hammer.jpg
Bahahahaha!!! Can I get that in Blue?
Blue flame... hmmm...
Hmmm. Ninesha, really? How could you? (-: I support my mods and stand by what they do and say! If I did not have full trust in them - where would we all be? Mods make this place a real community. They are a part of the community and you folks, have all played a role in making someone a mod!
"Student"? Hmm... Tough call. Depends on your definition. I constantly read new text books and listen to lectures on DVD. I'm always trying to learn new things and update on those things that didn't exist when I was in college.
i was searching so i found that pic i like you in pic dress \(\color{red}{:)}\)
hmmm i mean pink dress *******
And mods have their own lives - so when a mod takes some time off to live their lives, we understand. We are thankful for when they are on OpenStudy...
tkhunny.... blue has lost the power... http://www.ustoy.com/media/catalog/product/cache/3/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/M/X/MX290.jpg

NVM Ninesha. I forgive you.

Maybe I should write a blog about Mods: My fave peeps.
"Its a Mod Mod world"
"Post Mod-ernism on OpenStudy"

There is power in the purple for ban hammers... http://sd.keepcalm-o-matic.co.uk/i/keep-calm-and-ban-hammer-5.png http://i.imgur.com/B6hhnbw.png
@tkhunny
@Preetha , Oh, I see, giving the moddies all the love. I thought you loved me? I feel so hurt. I'm going to go relay this message to all the other Ambassadors.
Just for tkhunny... I have taken the best blue hammer I found and made it into a ban hammer. So it is stolen and modified... but here it is!
99% of the work done by original artist... http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L_q7p2DsEns/TgD3PROW4VI/AAAAAAAABng/jM39vRurLDg/s1600/HammerNail.jpg
@Compassionate As for yours... http://cdn.vanillaforums.com/bytebin.vanillaforums.com/FileUpload/c9/fe163372bbbc2f702275f5d84f1aa6.jpg

for both of you :)
SOME Ambassadors are insecure eh?
Well, he lost his glue...
@nnesha As for the random question thing, someone direct messaged me, "hi do you know how to do esters?" This is the down side of moddom. I had to look up esters just so I could tell them what class I had not taken. Turns out is was chemistry. I took geology.
sir @e.mccormick :) God BLESS YOU \(\color{red}{:)}\) keep smiling
Now if they had messahed that to Preetha, I bet she could have given them a very detailed answer... hehe. Seeing as how she has a chem PhD.
@e.mccormick out of 100 95% people message me for help( i like it ) but when out of math or out of my mind question
Wow all these funny posts.
mm i know the answer of first question :P

:D
@Werewolfprincess Has to read all of this lol
The guy wanting the illegal copy of the Python book has messaged me too.
lol
@e.mccormick What if an OpenStudier had shown maturity and responsibility but is under 18 yeas of age? Would you guys still consider the person?
The last time someone under 18 was thought about it was @Jamierox4ev3r and even though she was loved by the mods and Preetha, it still did not happen. So it would have to be someone truly exceptional these days.
@e.mccormick Did you just add the words "BAN HAMMER" to the picture for @tkhunny.
Yep. Like I said, it was 99% the original artist. Did you see the other blue hammer I found?
Yeah.
This is mine for right now.
I don't know what "MOD" means but I think it would be okay to use it here.
MODerator.
^
I know. I thought it meant something else the way it was used.
