Why did railroads have a greater impact on American society than did canals and steamboats?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Trains could carry more cargo and passengers than steamboats and weren't restricted to states with navigable waters; therefore, the interior states were as accessible as the coastal states under this mode of transport. In addition, railroads (allegedly) cost much less to build, and trains provided faster transportation.
