It is Alsace Lorraine or Elsass Lothringen in German. It was disputed between both Germany and France because of its strategic importance.. However, it should also be noted that the ethnic and language makeup of these provinces had large German and French populations which allowed both countries to make an ethnic and linguistic claim to the region.

Alsace and Lorraine were taken from France after the Franco-Prussian War for 2 reasons: 

Firstly,the newly announced and unified German empire wanted a buffer zone between France and Germany proper in the event of any future war between the 2 - Bismarck believed that it was inevitable that eventually France would attack Germany to gain revenge for their defeat in the war. 

Also,Alsace and Lorraine had lots of coal and iron ore which would be very useful as raw materials to German industry.
