Milosz and Ionesco wrote their works during WWII when the Nazis were taking over. Milosz's poem writes in an obtrusive and miffed tone, stating in his poem that "boots on the ground are not worth nearly as much as wings in the sky." He is not happy about the approach the government took. Ionesco's tone is frenetic and stunted, saying that the hippo-metaphor is meant to be taken as the president using food as a replacement for affirmative action. Both writers write about Nazis but use different tones.
