It all started when the Byzantine Empire asked Pope Urban for help because there Turk invasions threatened the Byzantine Empire. Seizing this opportunity, Pope Urban II campaigned the Crusades in hope of gaining back the "holy land" in the Middle East that had once belonged to Christians but then came under Muslim rule. The crusaders in the Middle East pillaged towns and even poured salt and other chemicals on the fields so that no Muslims could farm on those lands ever again.
