AB ___ DE Choose the relationship symbol that makes the statement true. < = > https://alphaomegaga.ignitiaschools.com/media/g_geo_ccss_2014/4/page69c.gif
AB<DE
If you think about it, you will understand that the side opposite the larger angle is the longer side
@ArkGoLucky I'm still a bit confused. So where the number 20 and 30 is at, everything to the left of that would be the longer side?
as u see in picture AB is less than (<) DE
if u have any problem in this question then u can ask me now?
Use your hands. Hold them together at the wrists and spread them apart. You will see that the distance between your fingertips increases which is the length of the third side of the triangle made up of your hands
@VengefulWave
@Haseeb96 Oh I think I see what you mean. AB is shorter than DE, so that's why it's AB<DE? Let me know so I can know that i'm on the same page.
yes AB < DE look on the picture u will find that the sides in both triangles are same which are 6 and 8 while the differences is only of angle in first one triangle the angle is 20 while on the other trinagle the angle is 30 degrees so when the angle will be large the another side will also increase thats why we wrote AB < DE
@ArkGoLucky @Haseeb96 I see what you mean with the example. I don't know why I didn't get it the first time. If you don't mind me asking, can you let me know if I got this one correct? Using the figure above, if A = D, then B ___ E. Choose the relationship symbol that makes the statement true. https://alphaomegaga.ignitiaschools.com/media/g_geo_ccss_2014/4/page69c.gif < = (My answer) > Is it correct? :)
yes u are correct B=E
Um not quite. B would greater than E i think
Can you explain why Ark?
The sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 so if you say x=B and E then 20+A+B=180 and 30+E+D =180
If A=D then B would have to be greater than E for the statements to remain true
20+A+B=180 30+A+E=180 (because A=D, you can substitute)
You understand?
Not quite. I understand the concept better than before, but i'm still confused. Is there another way you can explain it?
Do you understand the sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degress
Yes.
Okay now the sum of the angles of the first triangle would be 20+A+B yes? and the would be 180
For the second triangle, the sum is 30+D+E and that is also 180
Now because you are given that angle A=angle D, You can substitute the D in the second sum for A and it becomes 30+A+E=180
OK, so you're getting the 20 from the first triangle I understand that. Your also getting the 30 from the second triangle, and they equal 180 because 180 is the sum of a triangle, correct?
Yes
Now lets say, arbitrarily that angle A is equal to 40 degrees. Then the two equations for the two triangles would be 20+40+B=180 for the first and 30+40+E=180 for the second
Solving for B and E, you get B=120 and E=110. Clearly you see that B>E
