OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sound travels in mechanical waves. A mechanical wave is a disturbance that moves and transports energy from one place to another through a medium.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

sound is really just compressions and rarefactions of molecules in the air (which just means oscillations in pressure). The associated frequency of the pressure waves associated with the oscillations make tiny hairs inside your ear vibrate.
