because it assured them that their competitors could not copy their design. they could defend their product in court if a competitor used a product that looked nothing like theirs but worked using the same principles that they patented, as long as they could prove it, and as long as it is not ruled as a mere coincidence. you got luckey lol, this is right up my alley XD
