Modern law and government have been greatly influenced by classical Greece and Rome. The Greeks influenced us by inventing the idea of democracy, although they did have a different perception of democracy. The Greeks had direct democracy, which suggests that people themselves gathered in the assembly, and voted on bills. Today, we have indirect democracy. The people elect representatives, and the representatives vote on bills. Romans influenced us by giving us the idea of voting for representatives. They highly emphasized laws. Romans had the power of the veto. The American veto system was influenced by Rome. Both Greece and Rome had a concept of citizenship.
