I believe you're thinking about genetic engineering, that is the process of adding genes to organisms.
i think its gene therapy
it is genetic engineering or also called as recombinant dna technology. but as a natural phenomenon there are a few genes which get added at a particular place and also removed. they are called the transposons or the jumping genes

genetic engineering is a more general term for everything that has to do with creating recombinant organisms. Because the question asks for a process, a more appropriate answer would be "gene splicing".
