Thomson's experiment with the Cathode-Ray tube "FromThomson's experiments, scientists had to conclude that atoms were not just neutral spheres, but somehow were composed of electrically charged particles.....Further experimentation showed that an electron has a mass equal to 1/1837 the mass of a hydrogen atom, the lightest atom."
