the little lines on either side means absolute value. the number inside of absolute value can either be positive or negative, but the absolute value of the number is always positive. so if you had |-47| the absolute value is 47. same with |47| the absolute value of that is also 47. therefore the number inside could either be negative or positive and still equal a positive
