I said to think of the midpoint as the average.  Do you know how to find the average of a group of numbers?

yes with the corresponding coordinates

ex: for the x -5+(-2) = -7, divide that by 2 to get -7/2 = -3.5

the x coord of the midpoint is -7/2 or -3.5
