how do you find the sample variance?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know how to find the sample standard deviation, jut I need help on how to find the sample variance....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is the sample variance the average, or arithmetic mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 could you just tell me a simplified definition of a sample variance really quickly? sorry

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you know the sample standard deviation, you square it to get the sample variance

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sample variance = (sample standard deviation)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so do you calculate whatever you got with the ((n-mean)^2+(n-mean)^2...)/n-1 and for the sample standard deviation does it one step farther and square root it?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thank you so much for spending your time!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
