You can solve for this by doing the inverse of the equation. It's asking you to add a to -0.4 to get the answer. So you can subtract -0.4 from -3 to get the answer. What do you get when you do -3 - (-0.4)

a + (-0.4) = -3 This is a positive 1 being multiplied by a negative 0.4...A positive times a negative is a negative. a - 0.4 = -3 Add 0.4 to both sides a = -2.6
