With these, you can sound it out.

ingenious, in-jean-ee-us like Einstein was a genius.
ingenuous, in-jen-you-us like something is genuine.

These also relate to the meanings. Ingenious things are invented by a genius. An ingenuous thing is genuine, undistorted, and candidly sincere.

So whenever you have close words, try and sound them out more slowly to see if you recognize what they sound like. This is not 100% effective, but it can help.
