Agriculture in the south struggled after the civil war ended. The large plantations maintained by slaves no longer existed, and the Southern economy lost it's competitive edge when it came to cotton production. However, the agriculture in the North began advancing. Science and technology was progressing and farmers found new techniques of feeding livestock to increase efficiency and output.
