Al saves pennies. He agreed to give 1/3 of his pennies to Bev if she would give 1/3 of what she got from Al to Carl and if Carl in turn would give 1/3 of what he got from Bev to Dani. Bev, Carl, and Dani agreed. Dani recieved 9 pennies. How many pennies did Al have initially?

If Dani received 1/3 of Bev's pennies, that means Bev received 3 times as many pennies as she gave Dani. You need to work this problem in reverse, starting with the last person who received pennies and working your way to the first.
