The pythagorean theorem says that for a right triangle $$a ^{2}+b ^{2}=c ^{2}$$ where c is the hypoteneuse and a & b are the other 2 sides. 

A pythagorean triple just means that these three numbers fit together in the pythagorean theorem. For example, 3, 4, and 5 are a pythagorean triple because 

3^2+4^2=5^2

Pythagorean triples are handy to know because they'll save you calculation work.
