please, note that your polynomial is the sum of two monomial, the first, namely -2x^2y^2 has the degrre equal to 2+2=4, the second, namely -5x^2y^3 has the degree equal to 2+3=5. So your polynomial has the degree equal to 5, namely the highest degree of its monomials
