Let me give you my opinion: The key bodies are the hand from the football player and the ball. When 2 bodies, travelling in opposite directions , such as in this exercises, they did collide, which was the hand vs the ball and after the collision, the bodies STOCKED TOGETHER. This bolded expression is a key to tell you that the collision is inelastic. The other thing that proves it is that the total kinetic energy before collision is greater or different than that after collision.
