this problem is completely unfair
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
the length BC has two different values when you break up the quadrilateral into 2 triangles

yeah i know so i dont know how to solve it
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
oh wait, I think I made an error, one sec
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I dont know ive been asking about this and everyone has gotten different answers
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yeah I messed up with the construction, but I know how to fix it
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
ok I fixed it

and using the distance/length feature that is part of geogebra, I get this

Thank you!

Can you help me with this too?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
m = -9 is the given slope
(x,y) = (-1,-2) is the given point the line passes through
use y = mx+b and those 3 values given above to find b

-2=-9(-1)+b is that how to set it up?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and then B equals -4.5?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
b is not -4.5, but you have the equation -2=-9(-1)+b set up correctly
OpenStudy (anonymous):
is it a fraction? because I got -2=9+b and then you divide
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you don't divide

-9+b is the same as b+(-9) which turns into b-9
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so b equals -9
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
no
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you have -2 = b-9
b = ??
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
oh sry made a typo

you'll have -2 = 9+b which is the same as -2 = b+9
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
solve -2 = b+9 for b
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Thats what I got the -4.5? I'm confused lol
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you just subtract 9 from both sides
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you don't divide

i put 9 divided by -2 and got -4.5 and if i put -2 divided by 9 I get a repeating decimal?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
-2 = b+9
-2-9 = b+9-9 ... Subtract 9 from both sides.
-11 = b+0
-11 = b
b = -11
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
m = -9 and b = -11
so the equation is y = -9x - 11
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I thought you meant i was dividing wrong i misread that.
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
no you would divide if you wanted to undo multiplication
like -2 = -9*b
the * means multiply
