Apply hand wash (soap), Lather and wash for AT LEAST 15 seconds. Rinse both sides of hands with water. Dry hands and then shut off faucet with paper towel.

Certainly not pouring a gallon of hand soap and water on your sleeping mother. I learned THAT the hard way!
