terry has a board that is 4 yards long. how much needs to be sawn off to make the board 2 feet 8 inches long?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How many feet are in a yard?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Wouldn't the best thing to do is convert everything to inches?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Board is 144 inches long You want to make it 32 inches long so you must cut 144 -32 = 112 inches 9 feet 4 inches

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thk u both so much

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Seems Jessica made some conversion mistakes.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Two feet 8 inches is 2.66666666 feet and not 2.8 feet

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Sure

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

1 Yard = 3 Feet 1 Yard = 36 Inches 4 Yards = 12 Feet 12 Feet - 9.2 Feet = 2.8 Feet WHere is your calculation that 9.2 feet have to be removed?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

2 feet 8 inches = 2.6666666666 feet and not 2.8 feet (2.8 feet = 2 feet 9.6 inches)

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Well that is where the error is. 2.5 feet is not 2 feet 5 inches. It is 2 feet 6 inches.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

A good argument for the metric system isn't it?
