This wasn't true: The loyalist and Revolutionaries were about evenly matched in numbers, with the rest of the population being neutral. As the war went on more of the neutrals joined on the side of Revolutionaries than Loyalists, but at the beginning of the war it was about 1/3 of the people in each camp.
