Why was socialism a popular alternative to capitalism?

Let us go with the economic view of these two systems, I say this because mainly that is where capitalism is though. An good example is Margaret Thatcher, saying "there is no alternative" in that matter of alternative to her own brand of Capitalist economics. Socialism however seems to say otherwise. So why is socialism a popular alternative to some? Simply because the structure is often seen as family structured. The government in a socialist economic system is unlike the government of a capitalist economic system. A socialist economic system would provide individuals basic articles of consumption and certain necessary goods. A capitalist economic system which extends to government, results to laissez-faire meaning let it be. A capitalist economic system it truly opposite to socialism as laissez-faire would mean the government should not get involved with the economy. 

There is a lot more that can be talked about, just tell me if you still want to go the economic route.
