ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the answer depends on who you ask the question

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\[\mathbb{R} = \{ \alpha : \alpha \text{ is a dedekind cut}\}\] refer below for dedekind cut http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dedekind_cut

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

hey no for 9th grade you can define real numbers as a collection of `irrational` and `rational` numbers

OpenStudy (kainui):

Sorry, I was being harsh and philosophical. @ganeshie8 is right.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

A real number is pretty much any number you can think of. \(1, 2, 3.4, \pi,\sqrt{2},\pi+\sqrt{2}+4.5,\frac{2}{3}, 0.6666666666\overset{-}{6}*\pi*\pi\) just to name a few.

OpenStudy (perl):

a real number is any decimal, terminating or non-terminating with a caveat when you have a nonterminating string of 9's 0.999999.... = 1.0 or another example 0.52999999.... = 0.53

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Real numbers are numbers that can be found on the number line. This includes both the rational and irrational numbers.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

also 1.00000000000000000000....=1.0
