Could anyone explain how to do this? What is the value of h(–7)? h(x) = 3|x| – 1 h(–7) = ________?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

hint, |-7|=7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, so do I take the 7 and put it in place of x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

e_e Guess so?...

OpenStudy (phi):

close. h(-7) is short-hand for find the "definition of h(x)" and everywhere you see "x", replace x with -7

OpenStudy (phi):

name = formula or definition h(x) = 3|x| – 1 h(-7) = 3 |-7| -1 now you need to know what the | | things mean: absolute value. they make whatever is inside positive. so | 7| = 7 (no change) but |-7| becomes 7 (-7 became +7)

OpenStudy (phi):

refresh your browser if that does not display

Thanks, Phi.
