ATP is called the energy currency of the cell because
The body eventually converts ANY form of energy (any food we eat) into ATP, but the process is not simply a creation of ATP from these substances. The processes which are used to convert substances into glucose, and ketone bodies (the raw energy products (which are converted to ATP eventually), such as glycolysis, lipid metabolism, gluconeogenesis, etc all require ATP to function properly. Hence ATP is known as the currency of the a cell because it powers the processes, which in turn will produce a net increase of ATP for use by the cell (i.e ATP is not just created..existing ATP is exchanged between energy producing processes, in order to produce a net increase in ATP, hence it is considered the currency of the cell) https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071204051747AAyH99U
