That's all the problem said, so I assume so.

or a double-edged straightedge, but I'm not really sure what that is.

Draw x cm on both sides of the ruler, then rotate the ruler a bit and do the same. You'll end up with 2 sets of parallel lines that intersect giving a rhombus in the middle
