The conflict was partly political - both Spain and England were essentially trading nations expanding into the New World and their financial interests were already bringing them into conflict - and partly religious.

Elizabeth's England was strongly Protestant and Elizabeth herself was excommunicated by the Pope. This made her the perfect target for Catholic Europe, in which Philip II of Spain was the strongest authority, to wage war which had the backing of the Pope and the Holy Roman Empire. Unfortunately for Philip, he took far too long to organize the Armada (1588), and was very unlucky with the weather. His fleet was dispersed by gales and harried by the smaller English navy, and most of his ships were lost - putting paid to all thoughts of invasion and seriously weakening Spain's ability to combat the English at sea either in Europe or the New World.
