What is the length of a side of a cube with volume 729 cm3?

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

I think it is nine, do you have answer choices?? I took the 3rd square root of 729 and I got 9

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

yes it is nine|dw:1417453521333:dw|

sammixboo (sammixboo):

\(\color{#20bd23}{729~=~a^3}\) \(\rightarrow \) \(\color{#20bd23}{a~=~729^{(\frac{1}{3})}}\) So what is \(\color{#20bd23}{729^{(\frac{1}{3})}}\)

To solve this, you'll need to take the cube root of each side. A calculator would be helpful, since this number 729 is fairly large. If you don't have a calculator, then what you will need to do is find a number that you can cube. (that is, multiply times itself and times itself again!) and get 729. You probably know that: \[5^{3}=125~and~10^{^{3}}=1,000\]Since 729 is between 125 and 1,000, the number you need must be between 5 and 10.

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

just saying but you can just enter 729 in the calculator, and click the cube root button, and get the same thing, its just easier
