The U.S. and Britain had fought over the border inbetween the U.S. and Canada and by 1818, they had finally agreed the Oregon Territory would be settled by both of the countries. But in 1846 the Treaty of Washington expanded the U.S. border, with Canada at the 49th parallel to the Pacific Ocean.
