My assumption would be the degree of the first term.

not because it's the biggest, it's because of the (negative) cubed function: http://www.shelovesmath.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Cubic-Cube-Root-Functions.png you should have this one memorized, along with sqrt, parabola, and throw in a few more
