Because everyone had to change tactics because of all the modern machinery. It was the first time trenches were used

Yup she s right! It's the first time people were fighting hand to hand combat in Trenches, it's the first time it was actual war. And not no line infantry wars, in which they would line up in columns and fire. Also I believe WW1 has to do with Gas, poison, etc.. actually being used in their "Moderate" times.
