Get all of the q's on one side by subtracting from both sides. 11 + 5q = -19 Get the variable and its coefficient on one side by itself. 5q = -30 Divide by 5 to get q. q = -6

11 + 8q = 3q - 19 subtract from both sides 8q - 3q = 5q 11 + 5q = -19 -19 - 11 = -30 -30 / 5 = -6 q = -6
