so if he gained 40% less, that means he gained 60% of the weight he gained his first year (because 100% - 40% = 60%)

60% as a decimal is equal to 0.6

if x is the amount of weight he gained in his FIRST year of life, you need to multiply .6 by x to get how much weight he gained

thats 0.6x

now substitute in x for how much he gained the first year

0.6 * 12.75

all you need to do is multiply and you have how much weight he gained his second year of life(:
