JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

Well, the Compromise of 1850 was another feeble attempt to bridge an ever widening gulf between the societies in the North and South. By 1850, the South had a 37% disadvantage in the House of Representatives. Their political as well as their economic power was shrinking as opposed to their Northern neighbors. With the US's victory in the Mexican American War in 1848, and with the final negotiations with Great Britain over the Oregon Territory, vast, new territories were being added. Debate raged as to the issue of the expansion of slavery into these territories. The Compromise of 1850 tried to give something of value to the three major regions of the US. To the South, it gave 10 million dollars specifically to the new "slave" state of Texas, providing that Texas relinquish a large part of its territory. The South also received a pledge from the federal government that the Fugitive Slave Act, first enacted in 1793, would receive tougher measures, and stricter enforcement from Northern states, where slaves would likely escape. The new territories would be able to choose for themselves whether they wanted slavery. This idea was called " popular sovereignty". But the Greatest prize went to the region with the greatest power. California, with its great gold wealth first discovered in 1848, was to be brought into the Union in 1850 as a "free" state. This gold was to help finance America's great industrial expansion of the second half of the 19th century. As with all efforts to appease both North and South during the first part of the 1800's , The Compromise of 1850 did little to stave off the Great Civil War to come in 1861. So what do you guess the answer is?
