True or false The polynomial (X-2) is a factor of the polynomial 3x^2-8x+2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if (x-k) is a factor of p(x), then p(k) = 0

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so if (x-2) is a factor of p(x) = 3x^2-8x+2, then p(2) should be 0 is it 0? we don't know yet, but we can easily find out by plugging x = 2 into 3x^2-8x+2 and evaluating. What result do you get?

-2

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so because p(2) = -2 and NOT p(2) = 0, this means x-2 is NOT a factor of p(x)

Oh ok thank you
