with similar shapes, which this question is abut, if you know the ratio of the linear measurements you are told its 3: 1 then the ratio of the areas in the square of the linear ratio so \[3^2 : 1^1\] what happens when you simplify it...?

thats ok... you're correct... the the area of the outer shape is 9 times larger..
